At a glance: Primary bathroom remodel, part of a larger main-level renovation · Muskego, WI · Investment: $70,000–$100,000 · 2025 NARI Remodeler of the Year Silver Award

The story

With busy careers that keep them traveling and young kids at home, these homeowners wanted a primary bath that felt like the best hotels they'd stayed in: a calm, spa-like place to recharge. The original room wasn't close. A corner whirlpool tub they rarely used took up most of the floor, the enclosed shower was cramped, the oversized corner vanity offered little storage, and the toilet sat out in the open.

The design

We removed the whirlpool tub and reworked the layout within the existing footprint. A spacious two-person shower now sits along the exterior wall beneath the home's existing skylight, so we upgraded the plumbing and insulation on that wall and carefully detailed the waterproofing around the skylight. A rustic knotty alder double vanity with quartz counters and matte black fixtures brings warmth, and a new enclosed water closet adds privacy while giving guests easy access. This bath was part of the same renovation as the homeowners' Gold award-winning kitchen.

  • Two-person shower: Full-height frameless glass, dual shower heads, a handheld shower and a built-in bench.

  • Lighted niche: An illuminated niche adds soft ambient light and a spot for everyday essentials.

  • Skylight: The existing skylight keeps the shower bright and airy with natural light.

  • Knotty alder double vanity: Warm wood cabinetry with quartz counters, under-cabinet lighting and plenty of storage for two.

  • Private water closet: A new enclosed toilet room separates the space from the primary bedroom and works for guests.

  • Hotel-style finishes: Matte black fixtures, black-framed mirrors and a heated towel warmer.
